I strive to elevate the obscure to pleasing eye candy in a photo frame. Artists work hard to fill their often expansive spaces. Some of their fillers rock as the stars when given their own frames. This shot came from a great urban mural. When I first saw it I
Ain’t No Haint Going To Run Me Off: Blue Porch Ceiling Memories Flood Back To The Nevada Desert. The robed ghosts interrupt the desert skyline looking like misplaced clerics. The errie silence of the winter sunset leaves Rhyolite bathed in a cool, crystal ambience. This goldmining ghost town has
Forensic Foraging : Unlocking The Unseen. Most things, no matter how trite and mundane, have intrinsic beauty or interest when presented in just the proper way. This is the core premise underlying Forensic Foraging, an alternative technique for digital photography. This emerging motif employs the same throwback principles that made color
Crawdaddy Remembers A 1953 Christmas Encounter With the Drifters. My dad yanked me in hard out of the cold. It was mid-December 1953, and the black Gotham City skies were spitting down snow flurries. We were waiting to rendezvous with my mom who left us for a couple hours
My Last Day with Ollie Noonan: A Combat Photographer’s Remembrance I finally reconnected with Ollie Noonan, Jr. after 45 years. He is on Campobello Island now, near his family’s home, not at Fenway Park where we planned to meet. His gravesite is hard by the Bay of Fundy
The bus is part of some jarring American history but it also unexpectedly coughed up some funky modern art. I learned to shoot these naturally occurring abstracts from my colleague Jim Provencher. Just like pornography, you know it when you see it. You might just define it simply as being “off the wall” or as being “quirky odd“. I have been combining funk with the mundane in photo frames for decades. Confronted with shooting something spectacular like the Grand Canyon or the
Don’t Worry Mom, She’s Italian! Timi Yuro missed a golden chance for her career to be really spectacular. She turned down legendary composer Burt Bacharach’s offer to record WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE, in late 1962. She had already charted Number 1 a year earlier
I never made it to City Lights Book Store until the 2011honeymoon of my second marriage. The ethereal lure of San Francisco’s iconic North Beach was then powerful enough to finally coax me there. As I foraged the upstairs nooks, I felt the creative energy of those Beat geniuses
My work magnetically follows decay. The Great American Desert offers up some of the slowest, most spectacular decay in the world. Hard by the Borderline, a near ghost town hides decaying beauty. These brilliant colors fueled by a high noon winter sky offer up dramatic contrasts that could be stolen
Flaunting Free Speech In Berkley Earns Jimmy Pro An Ironic Library Ejection. Mario Savio, in his heyday, might have been highly pissed off. Berkeley, after all, offers up extensive historical DNA that supports free public expression. We landed up in the Public Library on a rainy March afternoon. We had
My Rendezvous With Jane Fonda Didn’t Work Out Jane Fonda arrived at the barricaded gate of Fort Hood, Texas with a small cadre of long haired ex-GIs fresh from a breakfast rally at the Oleo Strut. Barbarella was just beginning to make her mark as a Vietnam War
